Entertainment galore at the PVA!

The City of Johannesburg’s 2010 World Cup ™ Public Viewing Area at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown is a hive of activity during the tournament, screening all the games on big screens and offering a range of DJs, dancers and musicians to keep the party pumping. Until 11 July 2010, soccer lovers who can’t be at the games will be flocking to the PVA, located in the heart of Joburg’s vibey cultural hub, where a buzzing cosmopolitan atmosphere will prevail.

Bring a blanket and a Vuvuzela, and celebrate 2010 in an authentic, exuberant African style! Don’t miss out on being in the thick of the action, where it’s all happening – get your fix of the Beautiful Game at the Newtown PVA!

Various food and retail stalls are on offer, shwarmas, samoosas, hotdogs, Breyani, Pap and Vleis, Boerewors rolls, Bunny chows, cappucinos, Chinese food and more. On the retail side we have vendors selling African arts and crafts, soccer memorabilia, music , world cup inspired outfits, t-shirts and jerseys and much more.

Expect to see various DJs on the decks between matches, as well as the likes of DJ Menace, DJ Hunose, DJ Magedeza and DJ Kool (Nigeria). Dancers in a range of genres will get the crowds on their feet and dancing, including gumboot, Diski, pantsula, Bollywood and belly dancers, as well as breakdancers. The Public viewing area will also feature musicians from some of the countries playing in the World Cup, adding to the cross-cultural spirit. Among these are artists such as Segun, Olu Femi, Ayo Kunle (Nigeria), Mingas from Mozambique, Dudu Mahnenga from Mozambique, United Band from Ghana, Afro-Brazilian cultural group Olodum, Margareth Menezes (Brazil), Arezki (Algeria), as well as Livia, Clone, Kwill and Ivy (Korea). Also catch the likes of Tembi Seete, Winnie Khumalo, Sai and Rabitone, Shwi noMtekhala, Khwele Basini, Bianca, African Pride and Show Stopaz in action.

A Five aside soccer pitch is on site for soccer lovers who want to demonstrate their Maradonna soccer skills.

Hospitality packages are available for those spectators who wish to be a part of the vibrant PVA with the option of a more upmarket, and warmer, indoor viewing area. Extra screens will ensure none of the action is missed, while catering, an open bar and waiter service will make for a relaxed experience.  Don’t miss out on being in the thick of the action, where it’s all happening – get your fix of the Beautiful Game at the Newtown PVA! Entrance to the Public Viewing Area is free. No alcohol or firearms, bottles or cooler boxes are allowed into Mary Fitzgerald Square, located on the corner of Jeppe and Henry Nxumalo streets in Newtown.

Paid-for parking is available at 1 Central Place, and there is limited free on- and off-street parking near the venue, but it is advisable to rather use public transport or be dropped off in Newtown.
